Pianist Robert Glasper has reunited with his trio, which includes bassist Vicente Archer (Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan, Amos Lee) for the acoustic jazz record Covered (The Robert Glasper Trio Recorded Live at Capitol Studios). The trio, with drummer Damion Reid, is the same one that recorded Canvas in 2005 and In My Element in 2007. The Grammy-winning Glasper covers a wide variety of artists on the album recorded at the famed Hollywood studio, including Kendrick Lamar, with whom he worked on the latter’s To Pimp A Butterfly.
The trio also covers John Legend, Joni Mitchell, and Musiq Soulchild. It even puts its stamp on the standard “Stella By Starlight.” The album’s first single is the trio’s take on Radiohead’s “Reckoner”.
Texas-born jazz pianist Robert Glasper is an exciting study in contrasts. His compositions are harmonically intricate yet melodious and alluring, and he balances classical-sounding technique with subtle yet definite swing and even includes aspects of hip-hop. Glaspar has performed with an amazing variety of artists, including Carly Simon, Roy Hargrove, and Mos Def. On ELEMENT, his second disc for Blue Note, all these diverse strains come together for a trio session that's quietly challenging, user-friendly, and artistically satisfying.
